About Us

Gotland Alpaca Stud is situated at Whakarongo, 6 km's outside Palmerston North, heading towards Ashhurst. Since we both come from farming backgrounds we decided to move out into the country in 1995 when we purchased 18 acres of contoured bare land with extensive views of the surrounding Tararuas & Ruahine ranges as well as Kapiti Island.  We started off farming cattle and sheep for 7 years, but then when we first saw some alpacas at a Home Show, we decided we wanted to start breeding them instead.

Gotland Farm got its name from Lars' heritage, Gotland Island, which is outside of Sweden, in the Baltic Sea, where his parents originated from.

We are breeding Suris, White & coloureds, which display a beautiful silky handle, together with luster and density.  Our Suri Stud is the largest in the Lower North Island and we have Dual Registration and DNA verified stock.   As our herd is now quite large, there will be selected females available for purchase for anyone interested in entering this exclusive export opportunity.

We have a variety of Pet Wethers for Sale, all halter trained and which are good fibre producers.  We welcome you to visit our Suris and feel their sensational fibre.

How we started

We started with 2 female alpacas in 2002. Our first cria was a Female - a Dark Fawn First Cross Suri, out of a white Female Huacaya and a Suri Sire. Suris won our heart with being the rarest of breeds, with their exquisite feel to their fibre. Its softness is like cashmere, has lustre of silk and warmth and featherweight of goose down with the durability of wool.

We soon discovered to get quality in our herd faster was to breed from pure Suris, with top line Herdsires. We bought a herd of 14 full blooded Suris with Australian and USA genetics, amongst those 14, were 3 Males, which we had Certified, and now our genetics vary from Cedar House Prince of Stars to Kahuna and Allegro lines.

Time has moved fast since then and we have a herd of 80 plus animals in a wide range of colours, predominately Suri's. There are only 6% of Suri's nationwide but they are becoming more popular because of their rarity and their fleece is well sought after by the fashion industry and cherished by the hand spinners. Their fibre is highly prized for its very soft feel and it's thermal properties, available in many different colours.

Your visit is welcomed. When you do business with us you will experience honest, friendly service with a passion for Alpacas.
